Fire Lad aka Staq Mavlen was born on Shwar, a world with a minimal breathing atmosphere (by human standards). While investigating a fallen meteor, Mavlen breathed in the meteor's vapors and gained pyrokinetic powers. He was only able to breath fire but decided to apply for the Legion of Superheroes as Fire Lad. However, on planets with more oxygen than Shwar, such as Earth, his ability to control his powers becomes inconsistent. Fire Lad's lack of control led to his rejection. Like most applicants, Fire Lad has tried out multiple times.
